First Planning Unit meeting for the Watershed Management Project to be rescheduled while Initiating Governments incorporate public input

The Initiating Governments for the Watershed Management Project hosted a public meeting in Lynden on January 21, to discuss the organizational structure and function of the project. Many of the 65 people attending provided well-considered and valuable comments and suggestions. The Initiating Governments appreciate the positive and constructive responses, and are reviewing and incorporating many of the ideas into the design of the Planning Unit. The first meeting of the Planning Unit will therefore be rescheduled. The new date, probably in late March, will be announced. The meeting originally scheduled for February 25 has been cancelled.

The Watershed Management Project (created by House Bill 2514) enables local governments and organizations to determine and implement comprehensive watershed management for the Nooksack Basin. The Planning Unit will involve both local, state, and federal government participation as well as local non-governmental organizations with water resource interests. The project will deal with issues of water quantity, quality, habitat and instream flows.

The document Watershed Management Project Structure and Function, by the Initiating Governments for the Watershed Management Project describes the proposed organizational components of the project. This document will be expanded and modified to incorporate many of the ideas received. The revisions will include expanded information and ideas about caucus participation and the plan for the Public Involvement and Education element of the project.
