Technical Work The WRIA 1 Watershed Management Project seeks to make decisions about water with information collected through the best available science. While some issues in some parts of the WRIA have been studied thoroughly and recently, other areas or issues have not been examined in depth or with up-to-date scientific methods. Accurate and comprehensive scientific data will be crucial to understanding what policies and programs might be needed to manage WRIA 1's water resources. The four components of the WRIA 1 studies are: To fill in gaps in the data, the WRIA 1 Watershed Management Project has worked with two consultants. In 1999 - 2000, the US Geological Survey collected existing information about water quantity in WRIA 1, as a first step towards a water budget. Since 2000, a consultant team from Utah State University has been collating existing data from previous studies and gathering supplemental data to help answer key questions about how much water is available, how changing land uses could affect water quality, and so on. The results of the technical studies will be included in the Decision Support System, a series of computer models that will use the data to help predict what might happen under different water policies. The 2001 Early Action Items have been completed. |
