Implementing the Plan

The WRIA 1 Watershed Management Project didn't end with the adoption of the Watershed Management Plan in March 2005--its work has just begun.

As pieces of the Plan are put into action, they will be monitored and evaluated for whether they are achieving the Plan's goals. This information will be used to revise the Plan as necessary, as part of a process called adaptive management.

  1. Setting instream flow levels in two pilot areas, the Middle Fork Nooksack and Bertrand Creek basins.
  2. Completion of Phase III technical work.
  3. Completion of the Decision Support System.
  4. Pilot projects, including drainage-based management in Bertrand and Tenmile Creeks, East Hemmi wetland and stream restoration, ground water augmentation of stream flows, and low impact development centered on Whatcom County facilities.
  5. WRIA-wide programs, including compliance with existing regulations, integration of natural resource policies, water use efficiency, public involvement and education, and low impact development.
  6. Long-term monitoring program.
