Socioeconomic
Analysis
To help the project
team to understand some of the socioeconomic effects that the watershed
plan might have, several studies are being conducted.
- Baseline
characterization. This study will collect information on current
social and economic characteristics of WRIA 1, such as population, numbers
and types of jobs, and so on.
- Economic
and water demand assessments. The project team will look at how
each management solution might affect demand for water and the economy.
- Assessment
of non-market goods and services. There are goods and services that
do not have a visible market price and have often been left out of traditional
economic analyses. For example, amenities such as recreational opportunities,
scenic vistas, and healthy environments do not have price tags, but
they contribute to individuals' and communities' well-being. This study
will summarize the non-market amenities in WRIA 1 and, where information
is available, will quantify them.
- Long-term
data collection. The project team will set up a long-term protocol
(a set of standards regarding which assumptions and methodologies will
be used, and how data will be organized) for collecting socioeconomic
information.
- Socioeconomic
report. Key information from the other four studies will be integrated
into a single report on the likely economic, social, and cultural effects
of the various watershed management scenarios.
